I agree that the basic flying skills should be preserved by frequent manual flying. Not being able to fly manually is a definite threat. Still, I also believe that many lives were preserved due to the auto pilot usage, since many otherwise unavoidable human errors simply did not happen. Unlike computers, people may never be focused, healthy, undistracted etc. 100% of time.

Auto pilot has taken away a lot of skills. Has it affected everyone, not the real pilots out there. Look at the 'miracle' crews that come out of aircraft disasters unscathed, many of those pilots do stick and rudder flying still, even better gliding. These pilots have kept the ability to fly, and when things go wrong can call on these skills to save lives. Some airline pilots have lost even the ability to see problems, and know what to do, re-Air FranceA-330, where the crew kept saying I don't understand all the way down. Maybe all pilots should fly without auto pilot once a month or more to keep their skills.

The loss of basic airmanship skills seems to have been the cause of AF 447. That report should be required reading for every aviator. Very insightful human factors section that addresses specifically some of the points in your last paragraph.

Thanks for this great post!
