Bob Mandeville and Tony Reichhardt, I disappointed that you took the heading of the story (The First Presidential Flight) out of context, which was clear in what it meant. It simply meant that F.D. Roosevelt was the first president to not only fly in his capacity as serving president but that the aircraft was actually fitted out for the specific and historic trip to Casablanca. It was not iomportant how many previous presidents ever flew in an aircraft. The objective was to show that path taken that would lead to airforce one. That's all.

Bob -- You're right about Teddy Roosevelt's flight. In fact, we have that video on our site: http://www.airspacemag.com/video/Teddy-Roosevelt-Goes-Flying.html
But TR was already out of the White House when he flew. FDR was the first president to fly while still in office.

I respectfully beg to differ with the claim that Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first president to fly in an airplane. I just watched a historical newsreel clip an hour ago which showed President Theodore Roosevelt being belted into a Wright-Brothers era aircraft and the show made the claim that Theodore, not Franklin was the first President to fly. While the newsclip did not actually show Teddy in flight, it did make the First-Flight claim.

Who is right?
